Founded by independent historian and author Colin Mustful in 2019, History Through Fiction is a traditional, royalty paying literary press that publishes compelling historical novels that are rooted in historical research. In March 2022, History Through Fiction launched its Member-only Content Area, a section of its website dedicated to publishing historical fiction short stories. The stories, which are published on the first of each month, are carefully selected by HTF editors among a large number of submissions made by independent authors. Authors whose stories are selected for publication receive a $25 honorarium in exchange for providing HTF first-rights to publish their story.

With the success of its member area, and recognizing the need to provide historical authors with an outlet to publish their work, HTF has decided to hold its first annual short story contest. To do so, HTF has recently partnered with Duotrope, a writing and publishing database, to utilize its submission platform called Duosuma. All submissions must be made through Duosuma and require a $9 submission fee. Additionally, HTF has invited a variety of volunteer judges to review submissions based on six major criteria. The criteria include: Theme/Message, Historical Relevance, Character/Plot/Setting, Narration and POV, Writing Mechanics, Overall Impact/Quality. Everyone who submits a story to the contest will receive a discount code for free access to the HTF Member Area, a discount code for 25% off HTF novels purchased from the online store, and a written evaluation of their story.
