At History Through Fiction, we believe there is not quite so valuable as the Author’s Note. Similar to writing a letter to friend, the author’s note provides the author a direct connection to the reader. It allows the author to clarify their messsage while also providing transparency about their intentions and sources. In his author’s note for Reclaiming Mni Sota, author Colin Mustful, a white American writing about Minnesota and Native American history, describes the goals he has for his novel while being honest about who he is and the process he used to create his story.
