NANCY BURKHALTER LAUNCHES DEBUT HISTORICAL NOVEL

History Through Fiction is proud to announce the official launch of Nancy Burkhalter’s debut historical novel, The Education of Delhomme: Chopin, Sand, & La France.

A resident of Edmonds, Washington, Nancy Burkhalter is an educator, writer, journalist, linguist, and piano tuner. She holds a Master’s degree in journalism and English education, as well as a Doctorate in linguistics from the University of New Mexico. She has taught composition for many years in the United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Her overseas work led to an interest in comparative education, especially critical thinking. Both observations and research led to her book and blog, Critical Thinking Now. In 2019, she was a recipient of Go Back, Give Back, a fellowship through the State Department to train teachers in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Burkhalter’s novel, The Education of Delhomme: Chopin, Sand, & La France, tells the story of Beaulieu Delhomme, a fictional piano tuner for the famed pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin. Set among the chaos and intrigue of the 1848 French Revolution, The Education of Delhomme combines elements of a compelling, well-developed fictional novel along with accurate historical details including numerous historical figures such as the notable French novelist George Sand and the world’s first detective and spymaster Eugene-François Vidocq.

The novel has received numerous positive reviews including one from Diane Donovan of Midwest Book Review who writes, “Perhaps The Education of Delhomme's greatest strength lies in exploring the dichotomies between belief, purpose, and evolving political interactions that challenge and change everything.” Donovan calls the novel “exquisitely detailed, complex, and involving,” and concludes that, “The Education of Delhomme is highly recommended for historical novel readers who like their characters well-drawn and their story lines well grounded in historical facts.”

Burkhalter was the first author signed by History Through Fiction, a new independent press based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The press publishes high quality fiction that is rooted in accurate and detailed historical research. Books by History Through Fiction, though fictionalized, include important primary and secondary source materials that are disclosed to readers through a variety of traditionally nonfiction elements such as footnotes, endnotes, or a bibliography. This way, readers may enjoy a fictional narrative while also examining the historical foundation upon which that narrative is based. History Through Fiction’s next release is an epic tale of Mongol conquests titled, The Sky Worshipers. Authored by Iranian-American F.M. Deemyad, the novel is set for release on March 2, 2021.
